Weather Envy In Paradise

We all get a little “wenvious” from time to time.

My son, Dawson, playing with the leaves on a chilly autumn day back in Virginia.

Something many of my clients and long-time viewers of my channel will know is that, while I now call Florida home, I spent all of my childhood and much of my adult life in Virginia, first in sunny Virginia Beach and later in the cozy hills of Yorktown. Growing up in a place where each season had its time to shine, moving to Florida was a big adjustment! Gone were the days of checking the news at five in the morning to see if my children’s school would be postponed due to icy roads. Gone were the puffy coats and thick winter boots.

Sometimes I still feel nostalgic for that time, breathing in icy air and sipping hot chocolate on the porch. I miss my winter boots and my now unused collection of scarves. I miss seeing the seasons change the leaves on the trees around my house, and watching my kids try to crunch every bright red leaf under their feet as they walked home from school. My husband and I like to call this feeling “wenvious,” a word of our own design to mean feeling envious of the weather.

Sure, I miss those things–I get “wenvious” from time to time. But as a real estate agent who works with families from around the world looking to make Florida their home, my clients often tell me why Central Florida is the next stop in their life’s adventure, and one of the most common things I hear is that these families are desperate to escape the cold, icy weather of their hometown and come to live in the sunshine. And for all my weather envy, I absolutely understand!

The ACTUAL view from a beautiful spot here in Horizon West.

For each day I wish for snow, I have two more mornings where I step outside my house and smile at how the wind blows through the fronds of the palm trees outside my house, like a natural wind chime. For every moment I miss seeing cardinals and blue jays in my backyard, I have two more where I wave at the family of sand cranes that live in my neighborhood (we call them “The Johnsons”). Even Florida’s summer thunderstorms have their own charm, and I know that if I lived anywhere else, these are the things I would miss.

No matter how “wenvious” we might feel on occasion, Florida is truly a paradise! If you’re a Floridian like me, wishing for a chilly winter, I encourage you to look around and see the beauty of where we live. And if you’re one of our Northern neighbors reading this in the middle of a snowstorm, know that I understand your yearning for warm, sunny days–and I can help you make that dream a reality! Let’s soak in the sunshine together.
